Peoples Café Common Practices

  1. The reason that we meet in public cafes is to attract cafe patrons into our pro-active conversation. It is suggested that you engage in dialog with this in mind, and be open and welcoming to others nearby your table. Creative conversation can be very contagious!
  2. Please limit your comments to 2-minutes maximum.
  3. Please exercise fairness to allow others in the group to speak, especially those who haven’t spoken much (or at all) during the meeting.
  4. Discussion that focuses too heavily on “Us vs. Them” has generally been unproductive, and is dissuaded.
  5. Please acknowledge that all participants here are co-facilitators of this event. Whenever necessary, please speak-up to help avoid Hogging & Hijacking of the meeting.

Peoples Café Event Conveners

The role of the designated conveners at each and every Peoples Cafe event is multi-fold.

The primary consideration of a convener is to honor the vision of the Peoples Cafes. They are known as "conveners", rather than facilitators, because their role is more focused on supporting the special dialogue atmosphere than it is on managing the conversation.

The conveners will be alert to remind participants of the recommended "Common Practices" (above). The intention here is for the events to function as simply and respectfully as possible. The convener's goal is to get the conversation off on the right track. (S)he will typically request all attendees to share in the role of co-facilitating the event, rather than placing a large burden of responsibility or authority on one designated person.

As a result, the convener is most interested in creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. (S)he will be sure that everyone has the opportunity to introduce themselves to the group, and optionally offer some description for why they have chosen to attend. (S)he will be aware of issues regarding seating, sign placement, background noise, and other logistics.

The convener will also be aware of the P-Cafe's unique role as a tool within the overall building of a peoples' social movement. This means that in addition to fostering a conducive environment for stimulating dialogue, (s)he will be sure to promote the dissemination of information of other pro-active, movement-building events. This includes the distribution of promotional materials, as well as verbal announcements for other events and activities.

It is recommended that everyone participate in creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere, especially for those who have attended for the first time.
